Using HOLLIS

Search

The keyword search box is in the band at the top of the screen.

Refine

After you enter a search, the results can easily be refined by selecting a facet from the menu on the right side of the screen. Options include Library, Publication Date, Author, Format, Language, Subject, etc.

Breadcrumbs: Once you have selected one or more categories, the breadcrumb bar located just above the search results shows what you have selected. Breadcrumbs can be deleted from the list, in any order, by placing the mouse over the term and choosing: Remove. They can be locked in for future searches by choosing: Keep.

Advanced Search

Use the Advanced Search panel to limit your search terms to author, title, subject, publication date, or to limit your search to a certain format.

Searching specific fields can also be done in the main search box as follows. Use quotation marks with multiple words:

NOTE: Using Advanced Search or the options above turns off the stemming feature. Only exact matches will be retrieved.

You can also use 'OR' between terms to indicate that results can have any of the mentioned terms, or use 'NOT' between terms to exclude words. 'OR' and 'NOT' must be capitalized.

Results

The default sort is by relevance. You can re-sort your results by year, title, or author.

Relevance is determined by a combination of factors, including:

  1. Where your terms appear (records where your terms appear in the title, subtitle, or author fields are ranked highest)
  2. How many times your terms appear (records where your terms appear multiple times are ranked higher)
  3. Whether the terms in the record are an exact match or a variant of your terms (records with an exact match to your terms are ranked higher than those with a variant form of the term)

Word Cloud

The Word Cloud on the left of the screen includes terms that occur in the catalog in close proximity to those in your query. The Word Cloud can be hidden by clicking on the X in the upper right corner of the cloud panel.

Saving Records

Individual records can be selected from the results display or the record display by using the check box. Selected records can be printed or exported to RefWorks or EndNote. After selecting one or more records, you will see a drop-down menu on the results screen allowing you to export or print your list.

Individual records can be e-mailed. The ability to e-mail lists of records will be a future enhancement.

To bookmark a record, look for the "Link to this record" in the full record display, and right-click on the URL provided.

Linking to a Search

To link to a specific query, such as a search for "chaucer," use a URL in this form: http://discovery.lib.harvard.edu/?q=chaucer

To search for a specific subject, such as "Patent laws and legislation," use this syntax: http://discovery.lib.harvard.edu/?q=subjects:"Patent+laws+and+legislation"

Any of the indexes listed in the Advanced Search section can be used in this manner. To combine a fielded search with a keyword search, such as "Thomas Jefferson" as an author and "slavery" as a keyword anywhere, use: http://discovery.lib.harvard.edu/?q=author:"Thomas+Jefferson"+slavery
